The Department of Bengali is a division of the Arts department at the University of Karachi, Pakistan. It is one of the oldest Bengali language departments in Pakistan, it was introduced to promote the Bengali Language and Bengali Literature in Pakistan.[1]

History

The Department of Bengali at the University of Karachi was established in 1953 by Professor Syed Ali Ahsan who was the first Chairman of department. It was established to enhance facilities for advanced study and research in Bengali language and literature with an emphasis on the literature produced in the Indian subcontinent during the past nine centuries. [2]

Certification Courses

Department of Bengali at the University of Karachi also offers diploma and certification courses for non Bengali speaking students which were specially designed by Dr. Mohammad Abu Tayyub Khan, the current chairman of the department. The course contains 12 credit hours which are divided into two semesters.[4]
