A political scientist by training, she is also a social worker and reformer. Her target areas have been women's empowerment, education, rights of visually impaired persons, and natural disaster relief. She has represented India in several international conferences on social issues, including the 1975 World Congress of Women on the Status of Women, Berlin, Germany, the 1982 Round Table Peace Conference, Sofia, Bulgaria, and the 1983 Conference of the Foundation for the Welfare and Education of the Asian People, Japan.
Deepa Kaul is the daughter of Kailas Nath Kaul, a renowned botanist and agricultural scientist and Sheila Kaul, a social reformer and politician. She was married to Rattan Kaul, an Indian textile industrialist, in 1961, and has three sons. Deepa Kaul is a niece of Jawaharlal Nehru and a cousin of Indira Gandhi.
