David Sander (born May 1969 in Melbourne) is an Australian film writer and director and special effects artist who owns Surfaces Rendered, a visual effects, graphics, design, and film finishing business. Born in Melbourne, Sander has lived in Sydney since 1979 and considers the harbour city his home town.
After spending years operating his own small business specialising in desktop publishing, graphics for factual television and graphics for numerous television commercials, Sander spent time creating graphics on the first five seasons of the Network Nine series 20 to 1, and grading the popular Network Nine series Things To Try Before You Die before returning to freelance.
Seeking to be involved in more long-form projects, Sander provided the finishing for the controversial feature-length documentary, Food Matters[1] before spending almost two years working at Klinik Design[2] on numerous projects for corporate, advertising, and broadcast television. Sander has also contributed to short films and feature films, including The Last One (short), dir: Carlo Ledesma; Penelopa[3] (feature), dir: Ben Ferris;[4] Missing Water[5] (feature), dir: Khoa Do.
An aspiring feature film writer and director, Sander has been developing numerous projects, principally a self-funded science-fiction alternative history epic Man Conquers Space. To establish appropriate credentials in order to attain a feasible budget for that project, Sander has initiated a series of more modest interim projects, including short films and at least one feature. The first completed is Ghosts of War, a privately-funded short film created with feature-level production values.
Sander is also a vigorous supporter and participant in the Living History community, re-enacting the life and times of 10th century Anglo-Saxons as a member of the Huscarls Dark Age Re-enactment Society.[6] He also paints, sculpts, works in jewellery, carpentry and metalwork, and is a keen amateur photographer.[7]
