Mixed martial arts career
Early career
After various fights across Europe (predominantly in Holland), van Bergen appeared in the KSW promotion against Maciej Górski.[1] Van Bergen lost via armbar inside the first round.[2]
M-1 Global
Van Bergen joined M-1 Global and joined "Team Benelux" in the 2009 M-1 Challenge Season. The first event in the season involving van Bergen was at Tacoma, Washington, at M-1 Challenge 12 - USA on February 21, 2009. Van Bergen and Team Benelux faced off against Juha-Pekka Vainikainen. Van Bergen endured a reach disadvantage and suffered a bloodied nose. The fight turned into a slugfest that was well-received by the fans, as were the submission attempts by both men.[3] Van Bergen was able to win via unanimous decision; a victory that was Team Benelux's sole win of the night.[3]
Team Benelux returned on May 9, 2009 at M-1 Challenge 15 - Brazil, in São Paulo, Brazil to face Team Bulgaria. Van Bergen's opponent was Yanko Yanev. Unfortunately, van Bergen was not as successful on this occasion, as he fell to an armbar midway through the opening round.[4] The victory was costly, as Team Benelux fell to a 3–2 defeat.[4]
Team Benelux's final opening round matchup was against Team USA East. Van Bergen faced David Zitanick in the opening fight. Van Bergen was able to TKO Zitanick via strikes to start Team Benelux's night successfully.[5] The victory brought van Bergen's solo total in the M-1 Challenge competition to 2–1 (a feat only matched within his team by Jessie Gibbs[3][4][5]), while Team Benelux's overall fight total stood at 6–9 (1 event victory to 2 losses), resulting in their elimination.[3][4][5]
After a loss to Sergey Golyaev at a Bushido FC event, van Bergen appeared at the M-1 Selection 2010 - Western Europe Round 3 event against Jani Lax. Van Bergen lost via armbar in the opening round.[6]
KSW
Van Bergen entered into the lightweight tournament that was held at KSW XIV. His opening round opponent was Artur Sowiński. The fights were composed of two five-minute rounds, with a possible third three minute round in case of a draw. After both rounds, the judges scorecards were tied and the fight went to a third. Van Bergen was able to win that round to take the fight and advance to the semi-final.[7] The semi-final round saw van Bergen face Niko Puhakka, who was 19–10, going into the fight.[8] Unlike van Bergen, Puhakka had finished his fight early, ending it with an anaconda choke late in the second round.[7] Puhakka was able to win via unanimous decision to advance to the final.[7]
