The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, often abbreviated CDM, is one of fourteen graduate and professional schools of Columbia University. It is located at 630 West 168th Street in Manhattan, New York City.

The College of Dental Medicine has developed a mission possessing a "tripartite commitment: education, patient care and research."^[1] Each year, approximately 75 students graduate from the DDS program at the College of Dental Medicine at Columbia.

History

The School of Dental and Oral Surgery traces its origin to 1852, as the New York College of Dentistry, later the New York College of Dental and Oral Surgery. In 1916 Columbia University, recognizing dentistry as an integral part of the health sciences, established its own school of dental education and absorbed both the New York Post-graduate School of Dentistry and the New York School of Dental Hygiene. In 1923, the New York College of Dentistry merged with the New York College of Dental and Oral Surgery to form the present School of Dental and Oral Surgery of Columbia University. In January 2006, the School of Dental and Oral Surgery was renamed the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.^[2][1]

Education

Like most American dental schools, The College of Dental Medicine at Columbia offers the following academic programs:

DDS Program
Biomedically based, 4 year program leading to a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.
During the first 2 years, dental students at CDM take medical science courses along with students at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. The final 2 years of the curriculum focus on comprehensive clinical care.

Graduate Dental Education
• Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD), 1 and 2-year programs
• General Practice Residency (GPR)
• Endodontics
• Orthodontics
• Periodontics
• Pediatric Dentistry
• Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
• Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

The orthodontic, periodontic and prosthodontic programs are available in both certificate and Master's degree tracts.

Program for Advanced Standing Students
The program for students with advanced standing at Columbia enables graduates of foreign dental schools to gain the training needed to practice in the United States. Successful completion of the two and a half-year program allows dentists from overseas to take licensing exams in any state.

Dual-Degree Options
The College of Dental Medicine provides unique opportunities for students able to participate in a second program at Columbia University. The five programs available include a joint DDS-PhD program in Bioinformatics, a DDS/MPH program in affiliation with the Mailman School of Public Health, a DDS/MBA program in affiliation with the Graduate School of Business, and a DDS/MA or MEd program in affiliation with Teachers College.

The College of Dental Medicine possesses a research facility, the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Laboratory.

School facilities

The College of Dental Medicine is located on the campus of the Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
