coor =The Goldman School of Dental Medicine is the dental school of
Boston University . Its curriculum is noted for the APEX program (Professional Applied Experience) providing students with practical experience at a dental practice as part of its clinical training. The dental school has about 100 students per class. The school can trace its origins to 1958 when the Boston University Medical School started a "Department of Stomatology (medical study of the physiology and pathology of the mouth) to provide postdoctoral education in dentistry. At that time, the institution was the only one in the country devoted solely to specialty education in dentistry." [http://dentalschool.bu.edu/About/history.html The School's History] ] In 1963 it became a free standing School of Dentistry under Dean Henry M. Goldman. In 1972, it instituted a predoctoral program. In 1996 the school had outgrown its designation as a school of graduate dentistry and accordingly was renamed the "Boston University School of Dental Medicine". Dean Spencer N. Frankl has served in that position since 1977.
The University opened a new dental school in Dubai, UAE in 2007. The new dental program admitted their first class of students in July, 2008. "Dubai Healthcare City is a free medical zone within the Emirate of Dubai, has been developed as a world-class, academic medical community, which will be developed around the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center, Boston University Institute for Dental Research and Education, and a major university hospital", according to Kathi Ferland, director of admissions at GSDM.
