At last count, the school had 650 students, and is a member of the IHSA and the Interstate Eight Conference.[2] Coal City High School recently underwent renovation and was equipped with new state-of-the-art facilities, such as new science labs and a new auditorium and gymnasium. Coal City High School has had a history of notable athletic and interscholastic achievements. Nick Shepkowski (2004) is producer for the Danny Mac Show on Chicago based sports radio station 670 the Score.
CCHS alum Kristen Verdun was named the 2010 Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year John Marsaglia was the state champion in Impromptu Speaking Coal City's football team won the state title in 1993
