The use of double sided tape to create the illusion of double eyelids is a prominent practice in China and other Asian countries. There is a social element that takes the form of this practice of double eyelids. The pop culture has embraced this and is pushing millions of Chinese women to get surgery and use these non surgical alternatives to get the desired look. There is a social pressure that forces these women to feel the need to get procedures and use alternative practices to achieve a better standing in social expectations. The expectation and pressure of having double eyelids has become so great that Blepharoplasty has become a common surgery that many girls feel they need to have[1]. The curious thing is that Chinese culture shuns plastic surgery but thinks this is a basic procedure that is acceptable. Procedures like breast augmentation, Rhinoplasty and Liposuction are thought of as taboo, whereas Blepharoplasty is not only accepted but encouraged for women.
Double eyelids are sought after because of the appearance of a larger and more defined eye [2]. There is a belief that double eyelids are coming from a Western standard of beauty and have added a foreign undercurrent that is eroding the original culture. Some say, "procedures which some people see as being done solely to erase ethnic characteristics and make them conform more closely to the perceived white ideal." [3]
