Chess 961+
Chess 961+ is a chess variant of a chess variant called Chess960 or Fischer Random Chess. It is a somewhat freer than Chess960, as Chess 961+ calls for creativity and willingness to flex rules and fixations.
Unlike its mother-game. which has fixed and strict rules, Chess 961+ allows for changes in several aspects of the game, such as:
- Opening and playing with non-equal and non-opposite setup
- Bishops do not have to be on opposite colors, and can be both white or black
- Castling may or may not be permitted, and the rooks setting do not have to use Chess960 rules
In any case, the rules for the specific and unique game played, must be agreed upon by both players, in mutual understanding.
Origin of the name 961+
The name for chess960 derives from the 960 positions that the players can starts the game with. As Chess 961+ provides countless other starting positions, the Plus 1 has been added to the number. This Plus 1 comes from the world of esoteric schools for the full development of the human being, such as the schools conducted by George Gurdjieff, who presented what is known as The Fourth Way. As one of the many tools of introspection, meditation, and the ongoing inquiry of ourselves and the world around us, the world of numbers was looked upon in a new and wholesome manner in such schools. Metaphorically, the +1 represents the opportunity to give more, to produce more of oneself, a situation, or a responsibility. This can mean giving a bit more of oneself in work or other productive or creative activity, even after it seems the energy to act is depleted. Or, it can mean putting extra attention and bringing awareness to the present moment and action.
