Charlottenlund is a Danish town of the Capital Region of Denmark (Region Hovedstaden). It is the administrative seat of Gentofte Municipality. Bordered to the east by the Øresund Sound, to the South by Hellerup and to the north by Klampenborg, the town is one of the most affluent areas in Denmark.

Charlottenlund derives its name from Princess Charlotte Amalie, the daughter of King Frederick IV of Denmark and the sister of King Christian VI of Denmark, who rebuilt the Gyldenlund Palace in 1733 and named it Charlottenlund Palace after her.

Geography

The town is a suburb of Metropolitan Copenhagen situated in the north of Danish capital.

Charlottenlund is one of the most affluent suburbs in the Copenhagen area and is home to Danish celebrities, many corporate executives and numerous other wealthy individuals and families.

Most of the mansion and estates are clustered on and around the Strandvejen(Beach road) which starts in Hellerup, through Charlottenlund and follows Zealand's east coast all the way to Elsinore.

The renowned Danish architect Arne Jacobsen lived and designed many buildings in the area including a one-of-kind gas station, a unique housing complex called Bella Vista with ocean views and the Bellevue Theatre - all built in Arne Jacobsen's famous functionalist style.

Another Strandvejen monuments in Charlottenlund, is the statue of Knud Rasmussen, who gazes out over the Sound. The statue, which project 6 feet into the air, is made by sculptor Paul Sondergaard, and was established in 1963.

Just a few hundred meters away is the Bellevue Beach, a popular haunt with fashion conscious beach goers.

Culture and recreation

The Ordrupgaard Museum houses one of Northern Europe’s most considerable collections of Danish and French art from the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

Charlottenlund Strandpark competes with Bellevue Beach in being one of the most popular beaches for the citizens of Copenhagen. Charlottenlund Fort hosts many camping guests every years and being right next to Charlottenlund Strandpark and Denmark's Aquarium it is a popular destination for many tourists every summer. Denmark's Aquarium (Danish: Danmarks akvarium) is the largest aquarium in Denmark.

Charlottenlund Forest is also a popular recreative area as it is the largest forest in Gentofte Municipality and lies adjacent to Charlottenlund Strandpark forming a large green area bordering Øresund Sound in an otherwise fully developed suburb of Copenhagen.

Charlottenlund Trotting Track is situated just north of Charlottenlund Forest, and has weekly harness races. Most horses and jockeys are from Denmark, but several times every year the track hosts international events, with entries from Europe and North America.
