Ringsted

Ringsted is a city in Ringsted municipality located in the middle of the Danish island of Zealand. The population is 20.188 (2008). [http://www.ringsted.dk/OmKommunen/OmRingsted/RingstedsHistorie.aspx] Ringsted has a high percentage of immigrants on a Danish scale, mostly from Morocco, Lebanon, Palestine and Turkey.

Ringsted is located approximately 60 km from Copenhagen.

Tourism and transport

* Sankt Bendts Kirke ("Church of Saint Benedict")— Romanesque, former Benedictine abbey church, royal tombs.
* The Danish Tramway Museum of Skjoldnæsholm [http://www.sporvejsmuseet.dk/] is near Jystrup
* Ringsted railway station is served by both DSB domestic trains and international (EuroCity) services to Hamburg. There are frequent services to Copenhagen, Nykøbing Falster and Odense, although not all trains to Jutland stop at Ringsted. The bus station is in front of the railway station.

History

Ringsted was the site of Sjællands landsting.

In 1137, Canute Lavard was killed in Haraldsted forest, leading to outbreaks of civil war.

The town arms goes back to 1421. There have been a lot of discussion about what it portray. The traditional answer is at the top the hand of God and under that Virgin Mary with Jesus surrounded by three figures that worship her.
