Early life
Eustice is the son of Paul and Adele Eustice.[5]
Eustice went to Truro Cathedral School and Truro School, followed by Cornwall College at Pool. He was a member of Cornwall Athletic Club based at Carn Brea and ran for the county cross-country team for many years and still runs regularly to keep fit.[6]
Before entering politics, he worked for nine years in the family business, Trevaskis Fruit Farm near Connor Downs.[5]
Political career
Eustice stood unsuccessfully as a candidate for the UK Independence Party in the South West of England during the 1999 European Elections. He then went on to work as Campaign Director for the anti-euro 'No Campaign'. Whilst the project had strong links to Conservative Central Office, it aimed to be de-politicised in order to appeal to a broad spectrum of the population, inviting Labour MP's who spoke out against the euro, such as Kate Hoey to join the campaign.[7] Eustice then became Head of Press under Conservative Party leader Michael Howard during the 2005 General Election. He was later Press Secretary for current leader David Cameron from June 2005 until the end of 2008,[8] being part of his campaign team during the leadership contest. He was succeeded by Andy Coulson.
On leaving Cameron's office, George Eustice worked for Portland Communications, a public affairs company.[9] In September 2009, PR Week magazine published a "Soapbox" article by Eustice on the future of Public Relations. At that time he was still Associate Director of Portland.[10] He is no longer listed as a member of that company's staff.[11]
George Eustice made his maiden speech in the House of Commons on 24 June 2010.[12] He played a "key role" in the Conservative Party's opposition to the Alternative Voting system referendum in 2011.[13]
In September 2011, he argued that Cornwall's heritage should be administered by a Cornish organisation rather than English Heritage.[14]
