History

Inter+

On June 16, 2004, the Ethnic Channels Group (ECG) launched an ethnic Category 2 Specialty television service under the licence Ukrainian TV One issued by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Initially, ECG brought to Canada Inter+, a bilingual (Ukrainian/Russian) satellite TV service from Ukraine. The channel, which targets Ukrainian Diasporas around the world, is an international version of Ukrainian national terrestrial/cable TV network, Inter.

Channel 5

In September 2005, ECG re-branded Inter+ with Channel 5 (in Cyrillic: “5 канал”), a national news network from Ukraine. The channel uses the BBC format with news coverage every hour and it brands itself as “A Truthful News Channel”.

1+1 International

On June 2006, in its effort to boost subscription to the channel, ECG re-branded Channel 5 with 1+1 International, a Ukrainian-language TV channel from Ukraine. It is an international version of Studio 1+1 for the Ukrainian communities abroad. The main concept of 1+1 International is up-to-date TV Service of News and documentary projects combined with popular TV-series.

Tonis

In the fall of 2008, 1+1 International became unavailable in North America. By that time, Rogers, a Canadian major cable provider, had dropped the channel from its line-up due to law subscription. ECG, yet again, rebranded the channel with Tonis (in Cyrillic: “Тоніс”) an informational & educational channel from Ukraine.

In February 2009, both Aurora Cable and Telus TV, the only carriers of the channel, dropped the channel from their line-ups, rendering the channel no longer available.
