(2009)Delhi-6 is the soundtrack album to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 2009 bollywood film Delhi-6. A. R. Rahman scored the film,[1] his second collaboration with Mehra after Rang De Basanti and Prasoon Joshi penned the lyrics. The music was released on 14 January 2009 at the Indian Idol 4 competition.[2] The first video of the song "Masakali" was released featuring Sonam and Abhishek with a pigeon. However, the song was not part of the original film. According to the director, "The song was not really meant to be part of the narrative. I mean, who would think of putting in a song about a dove in a film like 'Delhi-6'? It just happened. When I came to the pre-climax portion of my script, I was stuck. I needed a continuity link taking the narrative to its finale".[3][4] Other videos released include the title track Delhi-6, the romantic interlude "Rehna Tu" as well as the folky "Genda Phool", an adaptation of a folk song from Chhattisgarh.[5]

[8]The soundtrack for the movie has received positive reviews, with most reviewers hailing the album to be one of Rahman's best works. NaachGaana.com reviewed the music saying "Delhi-6 is just as rich, just as powerful, and just as awe-inspiring as his work in Slumdog Millionaire. As we take the timeless stroll down the streets of Delhi 6, let us rejoice in the phenomenon that is Rahmania".[9] A review on Bollywood Hungama said, "Delhi 6 is near perfect. Rahman beats his own score with Delhi 6 which would easily go down as one of his best scores till date."[10] PlanetBollywood.com said, "One would think that Rahman couldn’t raise the bar any higher. Just when you wonder how high he can go, he raises the bar even higher until one feels that he has attained true musical nirvana and we are lucky enough to be along for the ride. "'Dilli 6' shows a Rahman that is at the top of his game. He is a league ahead of his contemporaries and an artist that transcends global boundaries to spread the joy of his music throughout the world. Each and every song in Dehli-6 upholds the high standards Rahman has set. Romantic numbers (Dil Gira Dafatan, Rehna Tu), upbeat compositions (Delhi-6, Genda Phool, Hey Kaala Bandar), uplifting tracks (Masakkali), devotional numbers (Arziyan, Aarti—Tumre Bhavan Mein), a full-fledged classical number (Bhor Bhaye) and a short and sweet poem (Noor), Delhi-6's OST has plenty of variety, and songs to suite everyone’s musical tastes."[11][12] According to Rediff's Sukanya Verma, "A. R. Rahman makes waiting for his music such a worthwhile chore what with one fantastic soundtrack after another. Close on the heels of a deserving Golden Globes wins follows the anticipated score of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi 6. Considering its impossible-to-define Chandni Chowk roots, Rahman injects the sounds of this 10-tracked album with an eclectic fusion of various genres."[13]

It is said that Rahman was not able to win the IIFA Award for his widely acclaimed soundtrack because he could not attend the award function as there was a call by South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce to boycott the artistes who participates in the award function.[17] And subsequently, the whole soundtrack was not given any of the awards.
