He is the oldest of three brothers; the youngest one is Sebastian Hernández who is six years younger than he is, and Salvador Hernández who is three years younger. He is from Spanish, Hispanic, Italian and American heritage[citation needed] and was raised as a Roman Catholic.[citation needed]
He started to study drama at age five, he later moved to California at the age of eleven, that same year he traveled to Spain to audition for Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone. Hernández's debut film was released on November 21, 2001 and collected less than one million dollars worldwide.[4] He stopped acting for more than four years until 2004. Hernández decided on not been home school, he currently studies at Covina High School in Los Angeles, California.[5]
Career
Acting career
In 2001, Hernández traveled to Spain to audition for Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone, his role was to play Octavio one of the kids from the orphanage, his character played more of the small supporting role but still catch the critics' attention.[6] The following year, while in vacation Hernández received his first hosting role for a week in 2002 on Mi TRL, Mexico.[7] After a few years out of the scene, Hernández made his first U.S appearance, as a freshman along Lindsay Lohan in the critical acclaimed film, Mean Girls.[8] Eventually the cameo only shows Hernández during the fight in school and also walking in the hallways. His first lead role came in the drama film Love, Pain and Vice Versa.[9] which premiered in April at the Tribeca Film Festival with positive reviews from both the public and the media.[10] According to the actor during the interview in El Show de Christina he is currently working on a horror film that will be "intense and really fun."[11]
Directing career
On October 15, 2008 Hernández released a statement via TV Azteca that he will be directing his first feature film that will be completely in the English language.[12] This will mark Hernández as the youngest Mexican to direct a film.
Modeling
Hernández has become better recognised between teens as an international style icon, rather than an actor.[13] Hernández made a guest appearance on the runway for French designer Arianne Phillepst in 2007, making this his debut at Los Angeles Fashion Week as a model.[14] On November 2, 2007 Hernández gave a cover story to "¡Hola! Magazine" were he spoke about his "fashion rules" and protested against the use of fur, since his a member of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), in the interview he attacked Jennifer Lopez, because the artist wears real fur.[15] That same year he was named one of People en Español's "50 Most Beautiful."[16] In the interview with the magazine, he said that his fashion icons were; "Audrey Hepburn, Kylie Minogue, Jim Morrison and Britney Spears."[17] He also appeared in the music video for "Piece of Me" from pop sensation Britney Spears.[18] According to The Associated Press, Hernández is one of the youngest international models to hit the Los Angeles Fashion Week runway.[19] Hernández is expected to pose for Vogue Magazine in the near future.
During August 2007, Martín Hernández used the popular social networking website MySpace to further his modeling "fashion" career. Hernández also used MySpace for blogging about his life while making social commentary on confidence, fame, and beauty.[20] But in late July, for unknown reasons his MySpace page became private and only friends can view the official page.[21]
Controversies
During an appearance at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival Hernández commented that more films like Brokeback Mountain should be produced, instead of those stupid comedy films. Hernández's comment received minimum amount of media attention, but the criticisms was harsh,[22] because Hernández was just fifteen years old at the time and had seen the film which is rated R. In response to the criticisms Hernández said that he was a very mature teenager and was able to view the film just like any other film.[23]
In June 2008, Hernández and his MySpace were involved in a controversy, according to media reports parents were disappointed at the actor for using explicit language on his comments and about me section, a source told Los Angeles Times that the use of Hernández's language was unacceptable, they said the actor used the words "fuck, bitch and slut."[24] Hernández never released a statement on why he was using such language.[25]
Philanthropy
Hernández was a vegetarian, an advocate for animal rights, and an active member of the animal protection organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), taking part in several campaigns for animal rights.[26] He became a vegetarian in her early teens when he saw his friend's father slaughtering animals he had at the family's farm.[27]
One of Martin's campaigns as a member of (PETA) has been against the use of fur and campaigning against Kentucky Fried Chicken. According to Hernández the restaurant is "not civilized or acceptable."[28] Hernández has expressed his interest to posse in the (PETA) campaign I'd Rather Go Naked than Wear Fur,[29] but since the actor is under age, the United States child protection service doesn't allow minors to be photograph nude under the age of eighteen.[30] In late 2007 and early 2008 Hernández joined a Covina High School program named Gay-Straight Alliances, which promotes sexual liberty between teens, for many experts Hernández is a great role model to represent this campaign. According to him the group offers the "liberty of being open about sexuality, it doesn't matter if you're gay, straight, or lesbian: you have the same rights as any other person."[citation needed] But aside from all his activism Hernández is not an active or member of the LGBT social movements.[31]
On November 6, 2008 Hernández made public his support in the LGBT community. Hernández publicly spoke out against California's Proposition 8 which eliminates same-sex marriage in California saying, "Im in shock that so many people are still closed minded and don't think about rights, it is sad that gay people can't have the right to marry."[32] This marked Hernández's first public support to the LGBT community since he revealed to be homosexual in early 2008.
Political positions
In an interview with the British program Tempranito when ask about the 2008 U.S. presidential election, Hernández showed his support to Barack Obama quoting "I can't vote I'm under age but if I can attract voters and help Obama I would."[33] The show's host continued by asking on why he wouldn't support John McCain, Hernández replied "I would never support someone that discriminates people by their life style."[34]
Influences
Hernández's Catholic background, sexuality and relationship with his parents were reflected in the film Love, Pain and Vice Versa. In many interviews Hernández has declared that his favorite musicians are Britney Spears and The Doors, when asked about why he choose to become an actor he quoted "Meryl Streep is the greatest actress in the world and her work makes me feel good and I would love to make people feel just the way she makes me feel."[35]
Hernández cites the melodramatic film The Hours and Empire of the Sun as two of his major inspirations for acting and directing films.[36]
