An ESPN-owned and operated event, it is contested at the brand new Carolina First Arena, home of the College of Charleston. Each team plays three games in three days. The Southern Conference (SoCon) serves as the event’s sponsoring conference and host. The inaugural tournament was held November 14–16, 2008.

ESPN confirmed that the 2009 field of eight schools have been selected for the tournament as follows: South Carolina, La Salle, Miami, Penn State, South Florida, Tulane, UNC Wilmington and Davidson.[2] Davidson was the representative from the host Southern Conference. The tournament was held from November 19–22, 2009.[2]
