The Perth-Bunbury Highway is a road being constructed in
Western Australia , linking the outer southern Perth suburb of Baldivis, near Rockingham, with theOld Coast Road near Preston Beach, bypassing the coastal city of Mandurah, and then following the Old Coast Road to the start of theAustralind Bypass in Leschenault, about convert|20|km|mi|0 north of the regional city of Bunbury. The road will include convert|70.5|km|mi|1 of dual carriageway.According to the
Government of Western Australia , the purpose of the road, which commenced construction in 2007, is to shorten journey times between the South West and the Perth metropolitan area and, in particular, provide for planned growth of the port of Bunbury, one of the State's three largest.Proposed freeway-grade interchanges are located at Safety Bay Road at the current terminus of the
Kwinana Freeway , Karnup and Paganoni Roads in Karnup, Lakes Road in Nambeelup and Pinjarra Road in Barragup. South of Pinjarra Road, the highway becomes a rural road having intersections with various minor roads in the shires of Murray and Waroona, most notably the Old Bunbury Road.Information about the construction project is disseminated through a partnership between
Main Roads Western Australia and the major construction contractors,Leighton Contractors , WA Limestone and GHD, called the "Southern Gateway Alliance". [ [http://www.sgalliance.com.au/about_alliance.html Southern Gateway Alliance website] ]References
