Biography
Born on Earth Day (April 22) in 1977, Danny has championed the natural biodiversity of our planet from a very young age. On his 12th birthday, he founded the organization Earth 2000 with just $23. By his 18th birthday, he transformed the Grassroots organization into the country's largest teenage activist charity spearheading worldwide campaigns on behalf of the environment.
Danny Seo calls his eco-friendly way living Simply Green. Through his books, television programs, magazine columns, and his how-to lifestyle lectures, Danny Seo continues to share his creative ideas on modern, eco-friendly living.
Danny has been named one of "40 Under 40" to watch by Crain's New York Business and in an honor of a lighter note, one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in 1998. He stars in a nationwide TV public service announcement campaign airing on HGTV and TLC encouraging Americans to recycle their old cell phones through a nonprofit program called Call2Recycle, a program of the nonprofit Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation. A speaker at colleges, corporations and special events, Danny has given hundreds of keynote addresses at places including the College of William & Mary, and The State of the World Forums and the National Kitchen & Bath Association. In May 2006, he gave the commencement speech to the University of California, Berkeley’s graduating class.
Danny maintains homes in Bucks County, Pennsylvania that are often used in magazine photo shoots, TV shows and for editorial lookbooks featuring his products. He views his homes as living laboratories where new green ideas, tips and projects can be tested before written about in books, demonstrated on TV or shared on his website.
Books and magazines
At age 19, Danny wrote the book Generation React (Ballantine; 1999), which chronicled his teenage years as the founder and President of a national environmental organization. In 2001, he wrote the follow-up Heaven on Earth, which gave readers simple and easy strategies to making a difference in their own communities. He appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to promote both books.
His first lifestyle book Conscious Style Home (St. Martin's Press; 2001) chronicles his renovation of his parents' Green Hills, Pennsylvania home. Showcasing easy-to-find eco-friendly materials, the book received positive reviews in The New York Times, Elle, Food & Wine, Elle Decor, and USA Today, which raved "Say 'environment' to Danny Seo, and it's as if you've punched the word into the search engine Google: Out roars an avalanche of ideas and references that threatens to scramble your brain."
His next books Simply Green Parties and Simply Green Giving highlight Danny's unique take and approach to stylish green living. Both books feature lush, colorful photography and clear, step-by-step instructions along with Danny's tips and how-to information on living the Simply Green way.
In 2008 Seo published Do Just One Thing: 2008 Day-to-Day Calendar, a daily calendar dispensing everyday ecological tips, this led to the creation of a new syndicated newspaper column of the same name distributed by Universal Syndicate to hundreds of newspapers nationwide.
As a columnist and contributing editor of Better Homes anf Gardens, Danny gives tips and ideas in the Living Green section for the magazine’s 40+ million readers. He also pens a column on their companion website. Danny was formerly a contributing style editor to Country Home magazine and was one of the first editors ever hired to work on the now defunct Organic Style magazine.
In May 2007, Danny served as the co-guest editor of Elle's annual Green issue. He worked with activist Laurie David and the Elle staff to create a number of green-themed fashion and lifestyle pieces for the pages of the magazine.
Television
As the Environmental Lifestyle Contributor on The CBS Early Show, Danny regularly shares seasonal and timely how-to information in the series "Going Green." From choosing the best solar lighting to detoxing your home, millions of viewers tune in to The Early Show to learn and see from Danny the latest and greatest in green tips and products.
Danny has hosted the special "50 Ways to Save the Planet" for Fine Living and recently co-starred in "Red Hot & Green" on HGTV. He also created and hosted the series "Simply Green with Danny Seo." A best-of DVD was created titled “Simple Steps to a Greener Home” (Gaiam/GT Media).
