Overview
Miguel Santos Vieira is a highly acclaimed concert pianist and a philosopher. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, he now lives between the Portuguese Capital and London, United Kingdom.
Miguel Vieira graduated and completed post-graduate studies in Philosophy and History of Ideas at Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2002).
He further was awarded the prestigious Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Doctoral Fellowship in the United Kingdom (2007-2010), which allowed him to pursue advanced studies in Philosophy in London.
He performed academic duties as Research Assistant to the Dean of Research of Heythrop College-University of London (2007-2009) and administrative duties to the Senate House (University of London) Research Assessment Exercice (2008).
He was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of London at a ceremony held at Imperial College London in December 2010. His areas of expertise are Ancient philosophy and Contemporary philosophy, having specialized in the thought of Aristotle and Heidegger's early philosophical output. He has presented several papers in seminars and international conferences in Portugal and the United Kingdom.
His Doctoral Thesis was published in 2010 in a limited author edition: "The Phenomenology of Aristotle in Heidegger's 'Sein und Zeit'", Óbidos, Várzea da Rainha, Portugal, pp. 487, ISBN:978-989-20-1928-4
He is currently based in the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of New University of Lisbon as a Research Fellow at the Cultural History Centre. He is currently working on a book about Orphism (religion) in the work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.
Piano accomplishments
In addition to his academic work, Miguel Vieira has also been giving public piano recitals since he was 11, in Portugal, Switzerland, France, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. He has appeared on Portuguese and Swiss national television, and radio. He specializes in Rachmaninov, Scriabin, and Schubert.
He studied with Fatima Fraga, and Madalena de Sa-Pessoa at the Lisbon's Music Academy. Miguel Vieira has been a close disciple and friend of the renowned concert pianist and composer, Dr. Leslie Howard for many years.
