Matthys Cock or Matthijs Wellens de Cock (c. 1505—1548) was a Flemish landscape painter and draughtsman of the Northern Renaissance.
Biography
He was born to a family of painters; his father was the Leiden-born painter Jan Wellens de Cock (1490-1527)[1], and his younger brother Hieronymus Cock (1510-1570) became a famous engraver who engraved 12 of his landscapes.[2] After becoming a master at his craft, Matthys took on pupils Willem van Santvoort, Jacob Grimmer and Jan Keynooghe.
According to Karel van Mander he was the first to bring the southern manner of landscape painting to the North and was mentioned with a poem about his landscapes by Dominicus Lampsonius.[2]
According to the RKD he is known as the draughtsman of the Errara sketchbook, in the collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.[3]
