Schwarzgold-Rennen

The Schwarzgold-Rennen is a Group 3 flat horse race in Germany open to three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run over a distance of 1,600 metres (approximately 1 mile) at Weidenpesch Racecourse, Cologne and takes place annually, presently in May.

Prior to 2008 it was run in November as the Kölner Herbst-Stuten-Meile, a race for which older fillies and mares were also eligible. This was promoted to Group 3 status in 2005 having been contested earlier at Listed level.

The present title is in honour of the filly Schwarzgold, winner of the German 1,000 Guineas, Preis der Diana and Deutsches Derby in 1940. The title has been used previously for the German 1,000 Guineas (1941–88), the Hamburger Stutenpreis (1995–98), the Diana-Trial (2004–07) and also Listed races at Hoppegarten and Cologne.

The switch to May was to provide a new trial race for the German 1,000 Guineas, which in 2008 was rescheduled for slightly later in the season.
