The rail system in Brazil operates on four rail gauges and services are operated by a variety of private and public operators.


Broad gauge (Irish gauge):4,057 km RailGauge|1.6 gauge
narrow gauge (Meter gauge):23,489 km RailGauge|1 gauge
Dual gauge:336 km 1000 mm and 1600 mm gauges (three rails) (1999 est.)
Standard gauge:
Total:27,882 km (1,122 km electrified); note - excludes urban rail

Brazil has some of the Heaviest iron ore trains in the world, and these run on metre gauge track.

2008

September 2008

In September 2008, Brazil's Transportation Ministry announced a high-speed train project for the world cup connecting Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Campinas. This would cost US$15 billion.

August 2008

On August 23, 2008, a deal was signed between Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela to develop an electified railway link between these countries. A minor hurdle is the use of both 50 Hz and 60 Hz.
