Edgar won seven NCAA championships while competing for the University of Tennessee and was named "Fastest Man Afloat" by Sports Illustrated magazine [1].He competed at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where he received a gold medal in 4 × 100 m freestyle relay.[1] He received a gold medal in 4 × 100 m freestyle relay at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia.

He set two world records during his career, both in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay.
Awards
Edgar was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1996.[2][3]
