Modi (surname)

Modi is a surname usually found amongst people from the Northern and Western Indian states of Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand and Gujarat. It can also be spelt as 'Mody' . It is not a subcaste of Baniya as such; Modi title being used by multiple Vaishya sub-castes. It is commonly used as a last name by Hindus, and Jains of India.
