Hyatt was born in
Washington, D.C. and graduated from Yale in 1862. He fought in theUS Civil War , reaching the rank of Captain. Studied underLouis Agassiz . A proponent of Neo-Lamarckism withEdward Drinker Cope . He edited "American Naturalist " between 1867 and 1870. Professor atMassachusetts Institute of Technology 1870-1888. He established a laboratory for the study of Marine Biology in Annisquam,Massachusetts . The River Road building gave him access to the Annisquam River, a salt water estuary. This enterprise was moved to Woods Hole and became the Woods HoleMarine Biological Laboratory . Hyatt was the father of famed sculptorAnna Hyatt Huntington . His other children were his daughterHarriet Randolph Hyatt Mayor , who was also a sculptor though less well known, and his son Alpheus Hyatt III.External links
