- Annisquam, Massachusetts
Annisquam is a small neighborhood on the northern coast of
Massachusetts , and a neighborhood of the city of Gloucester.A few miles from downtown Gloucester, Annisquam is primarily a residential neighborhood, and Annisquam's only businesses include a restaurant and marina, a small hotel, a Real Estate Company, a library and the Annisquam Yacht Club. It's small size and secluded geography make Annisquam a popular summer getaway.
At the mouth of the
Annisquam River on Ipswich Bay is the AnnisquamLighthouse , perhaps the village's most historic edifice. The lighthouse has been in the same spot since 1801, having undergone significant repairs in 1850. The Annisquam light stands adjacent to one of three neighborhood beaches, named "Lighthouse Beach." Like the two other beaches, Cambridge Beach and Old Wharf Lot, Lighthouse beach is private, open only to those who join the Squam Rock land trust that maintains the beach and surrounding area.In the late 19th century it was home to active granite quarrying and an associated railroad. The large quarries created by the removal of rock have partially filled with fresh water.
