Cedar Grove was originally settled along the shore of Lake Michigan by hardy and determined Dutch pioneers. Many of their descendants remain in the area today. The village relocated to its present site, about one mile inland, when the railroad came through.Every year the town remembers its Dutch heritage with a two-day celebration. The yearly [http://www.hollandfest.com Holland Fest] is held in Memorial Park during the last Friday and Saturday in July. The festival is strongly family oriented with various ethnic foods and a variety of music. Before the Saturday afternoon parade the main street is scrubbed by children and adults dressed in traditional Dutch costumes in order to prepare the road for the Klompen Dancers and parade to follow. Another nod to the village's Dutch roots is a full-sized replica
windmill in the aptly-named Windmill Park "downtown".Cedar Grove in popular culture
In a September 9, 2006, an episode of the FOX series
Prison Break titled "Subdivision" featured Cedar Grove in its plot. Escaped inmateCharles Patoshik found himself in the village where he ended up in a blind woman’s home who mistook him for her son. The woman had a painting of the Netherlands on her wall (a reference to the town’s Dutch heritage) which the inmate stole because he thought it looked like a beautiful place to live. He is also sighted at a localDairy Queen ; in reality, the closest one is located inBelgium, Wisconsin . The series actually films in the Dallas area, so the Cedar Grove presented in the series was a fictional representation.References
