Josiah Butterfield (
March 13 ,1795 – early 1871) was an earlyMormon leader and member of thePresidency of the Seventy of theChurch of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints .Butterfield was born in Dunstable,
Massachusetts , and married Polly Moulton onOctober 30 ,1819 . The couple spent the 1820s inMaine , whereJohn F. Boynton and a missionary companion baptized him in 1833. Butterfield relocated to Kirtland,Ohio , in 1834, where he worked on theKirtland Temple . There he also became a charter member (and stockholder) of theKirtland Safety Society . He was set apart as one of the seven presidents of Seventy onApril 6 ,1837 . October 28 ,1840 , Butterfield married Margaret Lawrence, a mother of two daughters. Shortly after this marriage, a conflict arose between Butterfield andJoseph Smith, Jr. over the Lawrence estate, from which Butterfield was set to benefit. Smith represented the two daughters' position. Smith wrote onMarch 28 ,1843 , that Butterfield "came to my house and insulted me so outrageously that I kicked him out of the house, across the yard, and into the street." Butterfield became disaffected and was excommunicated onOctober 7 ,1844 .Jedediah M. Grant took his place in the Presidency.Butterfield was later rebaptized and received his endowment in the
Nauvoo Temple onJanuary 20 ,1846 , although he did not travel west with theMormon pioneers . By 1853, he was on his way toCalifornia when he visited his nephew, Thomas Butterfield (namesake ofButterfield Canyon ), at Fort Herriman and affirmed his continuing faith inMormonism .In California, he married Clarinda who bore him two children. He died in the area of
Santa Cruz, California in 1871.References
