The population was 20,975 at the 2000 census.White Center is regarded as an impoverished area with high crime rates. While some
gentrification has recently occurred because of its proximity to Seattle, the area still faces significant issues relating to car theft, drugs, and violence. According to the
United States Census Bureau , the CDP has a total area of 3.4square mile s (8.8km² ), of which, 3.4 square miles (8.8 km²) of it is land and 0.29% is water. Late in 2004 the city ofBurien, Washington released a draft study for theannexation of all or part of White Center.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 20,975 people, 7,542 households, and 5,143 families residing in the CDP. Thepopulation density was 6,194.9 people per square mile (2,388.9/km²). There were 7,775 housing units at an average density of 2,296.3/sq mi (885.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 54.96% White, 6.41% Black or African American, 2.01% Native American, 21.09% Asian, 2.60% Pacific Islander, 6.89% from other races, and 6.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.98% of the population.There were 7,542 households out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 16.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% were non-families. 23.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.29.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.0 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $40,480, and the median income for a family was $43,038. Males had a median income of $34,937 versus $27,391 for females. The
per capita income for the CDP was $17,339. About 12.3% of families and 14.7% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 18.9% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.chools

Highline School District , which covers much of southwesternKing County . Elementary schools include:Beverly Park Elementary ,Mount View Elementary ,Southern Heights Elementary , andWhite Center Heights Elementary .
