Ritzville was officially incorporated on July 17, 1890. It was founded by Philip Ritz, for whom it is named. It has the biggest annual rodeo in eastern Washington. [Kirk, pg. 98]

As of the
census of 2000, there were 1,736 people, 777 households, and 470 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,347.8 people per square mile (519.6/km²). There were 873 housing units at an average density of 677.8/sq mi (261.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.79% White, 0.35% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.86% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.36% of the population.GR|2There were 777 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% were non-families. 36.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.75.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 25.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,560, and the median income for a family was $40,240. Males had a median income of $32,500 versus $21,083 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $18,308. About 8.4% of families and 14.3% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 20.1% of those under age 18 and 8.6% of those age 65 or over.Climate
