Saxtons River is an incorporated village in the town of Rockingham in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 519 at the 2000 census. For over a hundred years, Saxtons River has been the home of Vermont Academy, an independent secondary school.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the 2000 CensusGR|2, there were 519 people, 209 households, and 137 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,032.2 people per square mile (400.8/km²). There were 220 housing units at an average density of 437.5/sq mi (169.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.46% White, 0.58% Asian, 0.19% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.35% of the population.

There were 209 households out of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were couples living together and joined in either marriage or civil union, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 27.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the village the population was spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $36,944, and the median income for a family was $45,893. Males had a median income of $30,625 versus $28,750 for females. The per capita income for the village was $22,409. About 7.5% of families and 11.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.0% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
