Panton is a town in Addison County, Vermont, United States. The population was 682 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.0 square miles (57.1 km²), of which, 15.5 square miles (40.1 km²) of it is land and 6.6 square miles (17.0 km²) of it (29.78%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 682 people, 248 households, and 192 families residing in the town. The population density was 44.1 people per square mile (17.0/km²). There were 276 housing units at an average density of 17.8/sq mi (6.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.92% White, 0.73% Native American, 0.15% Asian, and 2.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.15% of the population.

There were 248 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.1% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 16.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $46,184, and the median income for a family was $49,375. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $24,375 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,586. About 4.7% of families and 8.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.0% of those under age 18 and 12.9% of those age 65 or over.

In popular culture

The station agent who advises the protagonist about visiting a secretive coastal town in H.P. Lovecraft's horror short story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" says that he originally came from Panton.
