South African Rail Commuter Corporation LTD (SARCC) is a large South African passenger and commuter rail services company. It was formed as a limited company on April 1 1990 along with Transnet out of the South African Transport Services. A majority of the company's stock is owned by the Department of Public Enterprises, or DPE, of the South African government. The SARCC holds custodianship of all commuter and passenger rail assets such as land in and around stations, infrastructure and rolling stock in the urban areas of South Africa. It operates the service through Metrorail. Metrorail was formed as a business unit of Transnet and was later moved to SARCC. In the eary 90s Metrorail was separted from the SARCC and placed under Spoornet but was later transferred back into SARCC in 2006.
