Frumious Bandersnatch

Frumious Bandersnatch

Frumious Bandersnatch was a seminal psychedelic rock band of the late 1960's. The band was named after a character from the famous Lewis Carroll poem "Jabberwocky". Based out of San Francisco, California, which at the time was the center of the psychedelic movement, the band had a short life span, being active only from 1967–1969. They only released one studio recording, a three-song EP, during their brief existence. The EP produced a minor underground hit with the song "Hearts to Cry", which has since appeared in several compilations of 1960's psychedelic music, including the Rhino Records release "". A recording of their live work, titled "A Young Man's Song", was released the Big Beat label as a part of their "Nuggets From the Golden State" series.

The band is far more notable as an incubator for other bands which grew out of the 1960's San Francisco music scene. Four members of Frumious Bandersnatch, Bobby Winkelman, Jack King, Ross Valory, and David Denny would be regular members of the Steve Miller Band. Valory, along with fellow Frumious Bandersnatch member George Tickner and manager Herbie Herbert would join with ex-Santana members Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie to form the band Journey in 1973.
