Breckenridge is a city in Stephens County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Stephens CountyGR|6. The mayor is Jim McKay.

April 2008 Tornado

At approximately 5:20 PM local time on April 9, 2008, three tornados, including a pair of "sisters", were confirmed to have hit at least a portion of the town [http://cbs11tv.com/weathernewsstories/severe.weather.preparations.2.696015.html] . Fifteen citizens were reported injured within the city limits. Five buildings were destroyed, including the airport, which was a former Air Force training facility. Damage reports are still being received.

Geography

Breckenridge is located at coor dms|32|45|24|N|98|54|20|W|city (32.756793, -98.905580)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km²), of which, 4.2 square miles (10.7 km²) of it is land and 0.24% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 5,868 people, 2,274 households, and 1,546 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,412.8 people per square mile (545.9/km²). There were 2,776 housing units at an average density of 668.4/sq mi (258.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 83.88% White, .01% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 11.28% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.64% of the population.

There were 2,274 households out of which 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.16.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,697, and the median income for a family was $35,164. Males had a median income of $25,923 versus $20,467 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,014. About 16.9% of families and 19.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.9% of those under age 18 and 14.4% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The City of Breckenridge is served by the Breckenridge Independent School District.

Breckenridge High School's mascot is a Buckaroo (a cowboy riding a bucking horse). The Junior High School's mascot is a Bronco.The Breckenridge High School Football team of 1958 was voted the Ft. Worth Star Telegram team of the century. The Buckaroos have appeared in six Class 3A State Football Championships, winning four times in 1951, 1952, 1954, and 1958 with ties in 1929 and 1959. Breckenridge High School has also produced girls tennis state champions, girls golf state champions, FFA & 4-H state and national champions, and academic state champions over the past decade.

Also present is a Branch of Texas State Technical College West Texas. Offering many courses such as Chemical Dependency Counciling, LVN and RN classes, Building Construction and Technology, AIT, and the premier program, Environmental Science

History

Breckenridge was a major oil producer in the early 1920's. The population jumped from a thousand to fifty thousand in under five years.
