A bursa (plural "bursae" or "bursas";Latin : "Bursa synovialis") is a small fluid-filled sac made of white fibrous tissue and lined withsynovial membrane . It provides a cushion between bones and tendons and/or muscles around a joint; bursae are filled withsynovial fluid and are found around almost every major joint of the body; when they become inflamed, the condition is called bursitis.Etymology
"Bursa" is Latin for purse, which is what a bursa resembles.
Pathology
Infection or irritation of a bursa leads to
bursitis (inflammation of a bursa). The general term for disease of bursae is "bursopathy". Current medical studies have no specific knowledge of the entire bursae system.See also
