As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,021 people, 410 households, and 261 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 660.1 people per square mile (254.3/km²). There were 481 housing units at an average density of 311.0/sq mi (119.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.50% White, 5.48% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.39% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.94% of the population.There were 410 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% were married couples living together, 17.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 33.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 82.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,119, and the median income for a family was $34,375. Males had a median income of $31,685 versus $18,393 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $15,107. About 10.5% of families and 13.7% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 21.7% of those age 65 or over.Education

Rains County Public Library serves all of Rains County with a collection of over 17,000 books, audios and videos, six public access computers. The Library is located at 150 Doris Briggs Parkway in Emory. Preschool storytime is held each Tuesday morning at 10:30.
