The object was named for Argentine first lady Eva Perón, and its name translates from Spanish to "martyr", a term sometimes given her alongside in relation to her work towards social justice.[2] The asteroids 1569 Evita, 1581 Abanderada, 1588 Descamisada and 1589 Fanatica were also discovered by Itzigsohn, and were also given names in tribute to Perón.
