The Technical University of Madrid ( _es. Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, UPM) is a Spanish university, located in Madrid. It was founded in 1971 as the result of merging different Technical Schools of Engineering and Architecture, originated mainly in the 18th century [http://www2.upm.es/portal/site/institucional/menuitem.52fbe7cf7513e1fbc5889680907c46a8/ Detailed history of the UPM and the constituent Schools (official site, in spanish)] . Over 35.000 students attend classes during the year.

It is part of the TIME network, which groups fifty engineering schools throughout Europe.

Degrees

In Spain there are two levels of technical studies. For engineering studies there is a 3-year degree called _es. "Ingeniero Técnico" (Technical Engineer) and a 5 or 6-year degree called _es. "Ingeniero" (Engineer). In the case of architecture studies there is a 3-year degree called _es. "Arquitecto Técnico" (Technical Architect) and a 5 or 6-year degree called _es. "Arquitecto" (Architect). Those degrees will disappear due to the Bologna process and the new structure, at least for engineering studies, will most likely feature 4-year degrees with master's degrees on top. The current situation of 5 or 6-year undergraduate degrees follows the formerly widespread tradition of technical universities in Continental Europe, that awarded their students an Engineer's degree, being that degree comparable to a master's degree.

Some of the degrees offered at the UPM are:
* Aeronautics Engineering ( _es. "Ingeniería Aeronáutica")
* Architecture ( _es. "Arquitectura")
* Chemical Engineering ( _es. "Ingeniería Química")
* Computer Science, Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering and Information Systems ( _es. "Ingeniería en Informática")
* Civil Engineering ( _es. "Ingeniería de Caminos, Canales y Puertos")
* Electronics, Information Technology and Telecommunications Engineering ( _es. "Ingeniero de Telecomunicación")
* Geology Engineering ( _es. "Ingeniero Geólogo")
* Industrial and Electrical Engineering ( _es. "Ingeniería Industrial")
* Forest Engineering ( _es. "Ingeniería de Montes")
* Mine Engineering ( _es. "Ingeniería de Minas")
* Naval Engineering ( _es. "Ingeniería Naval")

Campuses

UPM's Schools are spread all over Madrid, instead of being placed in a unified campus. They are:

*University City ("Ciudad Universitaria") or Moncloa Campus
*Montegancedo Campus
*South Campus (Vallecas's Politechnical Complex)
*Downtown Campus (Schools inside Madrid's historical center)
