Brownsboro is a city in Henderson County, Texas, United States. The population was 796 at the 2000 census. The community is on Texas State Highway 31.

Brownsboro was originally called Normandy and was settled by Norwegian immigrants in the middle 1840s. Johan Reinert (1810-1864) and Elise Tuede (1815-1985), writing in Norwegian publications, urged settlers to come to the United States for "a rich life." Ole Rierson in 1845 bouught land for the Brownsboro Norwegian Lutheran Cemetery, which contains twenty-four marked and eighty-one unmarked graves. A nearby Lutheran church served as the chapel for the cemetery until the 1920s. [Texas Historical Commission, Historical markers, Texas State Highway 31 in Brownsboro]

Brownsboro is located at coor dms|32|18|3|N|95|36|54|W|city (32.300745, -95.615022)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 796 people, 291 households, and 220 families residing in the city. The population density was 407.0 people per square mile (156.8/km²). There were 323 housing units at an average density of 165.2/sq mi (63.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.73% White, 1.38% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.88% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.28% of the population.

There were 291 households out of which 44.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% were married couples living together, 15.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.15.

In the city the population was spread out with 33.0% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,542, and the median income for a family was $29,844. Males had a median income of $25,729 versus $21,125 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,851. About 20.8% of families and 22.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.5% of those under age 18 and 7.7% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The City of Brownsboro is served by the Brownsboro Independent School District, home to the award winning Final Curtain Players Theater Company. Final Curtain Players is best known as the starting place of popular author Michael-Paul Mattis.
