Freedom Township is one of the eighteen townships of Portage County, Ohio, United States. The 2000 census found 2,751 people in the township. Geography

Located in the northeastern part of the county, it borders the following townships:
*Hiram Township - north
*Windham Township - east
*Paris Township - southeast corner
*Charlestown Township - south
*Ravenna Township - southwest corner
*Shalersville Township - west
*Mantua Township - northwest corner

A small part of the village of Garrettsville was formed from far northeastern Freedom Township.

Formed from Town 4, Range 7 of the Connecticut Western Reserve, Freedom Township covers an area of 24 sq mi.

Name and history

Statewide, other Freedom Townships are located in Henry and Wood Counties.

Government

The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township clerk, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the clerkship or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.
