According to the
United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 12.9square mile s (33.3km² ), of which, 12.8 square miles (33.2 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.31%) is water.Ripley is located on the southeastern edge of the
New Madrid Seismic Zone , an area with a highearthquake risk.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 7,844 people, 3,142 households, and 2,054 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 612.3 people per square mile (236.4/km²). There were 3,397 housing units at an average density of 265.2/sq mi (102.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 51.56% White, 46.81% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.38% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.07% of the population.There were 3,142 households out of which 32.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.1% were married couples living together, 23.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 31.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $23,662, and the median income for a family was $34,183. Males had a median income of $31,321 versus $20,661 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $13,710. About 22.1% of families and 27.2% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 38.1% of those under age 18 and 27.5% of those age 65 or over.Culture

Ripley parks and recreation
Ripley Park, also known as Ripley Pool and Waterslide, is located at 200 Mary Robert. Its facilities include: pool with water slide, playground equipment, four rentable pavilions, grills, a baseball field, a jogging trail, large grassy areas with well-kept fauna, soft drink machines, public telephones, parking, restrooms, and the park office.
TKS Fitness Center
TKS Fitness Center is Ripley's sole, membership-required fitness center. The fitness center is located at 200 Knee Street, near Ripley High School.
