Harrisburg is a city in Lincoln County, South Dakota, United States and is a suburb of Sioux Falls. The population was 958 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Harrisburg is located at coor dms|43|25|46|N|96|41|46|W|city (43.429366, -96.696113)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.4 km²), all of it land.

Harrisburg has been assigned the ZIP code 57032 and the FIPS place code 27260.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 958 people, 315 households, and 263 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,052.2 people per square mile (406.5/km²). There were 318 housing units at an average density of 349.3/sq mi (134.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.64% White, 0.10% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.42% from other races, and 0.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.42% of the population.

There were 315 households out of which 53.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.5% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.2% were non-families. 10.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.04 and the average family size was 3.31.

In the city the population was spread out with 33.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 37.0% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 106.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $51,196, and the median income for a family was $54,792. Males had a median income of $32,109 versus $24,167 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,414. About 0.8% of families and 1.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.9% of those under age 18 and 4.3% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Harrisburg has one of the fastest growing School Districts in the state. Harrisburg currently has one High School, one Middle School, and three Elementary Schools, Explorer, Liberty, and Journey. Explorer and Journey are located on the outer edges of Sioux Falls. Harrisburg is currently building a new High School along with a new Sports Campus and a new Football Stadium. Harrisburg just recently built a new High School but with the rapid growth, the new High School is being turned into a Middle School, and the current Middle School will now be apart of Liberty Elementary.
