Located in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Range, it is part of a group of six thirteeners at the north end of the park that includes Milwaukee Peak and Mount Herard. The west slope of the mountain is within Rio Grande National Forest.
Tijeras is Spanish for scissors, and refers to the double-pronged rocky tip of the mountain.
