Notable schools include LaFrance Elementary, Riverside Middle School, and Pendleton High School. The latter is currently the headquarters of the Pendleton District Historical, Recreational and Tourism Commission. Near Pendleton are the historic plantation homes Ashtabula and Woodburn.Geography

United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 3.6square mile s (9.3km² ), of which, 3.6 square miles (9.2 km²) of it is land and 0.28% is water.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,966 people, 1,397 households, and 799 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 831.5 people per square mile (320.8/km²). There were 1,533 housing units at an average density of 429.7/sq mi (165.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 64.70% White, 33.07% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.54% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.52% of the population.There were 1,397 households out of which 21.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.0% were married couples living together, 16.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.8% were non-families. 35.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.75.
In the town the population was spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 83.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $28,052, and the median income for a family was $37,606. Males had a median income of $30,341 versus $23,843 for females. The
