The World Kidney Day (WKD) is an international observance that aims to raise awareness about the heavy burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD). WKD is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF). The inaugural event against kidney disease kicked-off in March 2006, and since has marked the second Thursday of March as the official World Kidney Day [Sudhir V. Shah & John Feehally, The Third World Kidney Day:Looking Back and Thinking Forward, 2008 pg.1 http://www.associationhq.com/wkd2/UserFiles/File/editorial08.pdf] .

Guided by the WKD Steering Committee – includes 4 members from both organizations – and a scientific advisory committee, WKD campaigns to inform and educate health policy-makers, people who are at highest risk of CKD, and the general public that kidney disease is common, harmful and treatable [Sudhir V. Shah & John Feehally, The Third World Kidney Day:Looking Back and Thinking Forward, 2008 pg.3 http://www.associationhq.com/wkd2/UserFiles/File/editorial08.pdf] .
