Oormelalagiyan (also transliterated as Oormenialagiyan, Urmenialagiyan, Urmelalagiyan, and Oormelalagian) is a village in Tamil Nadu, India. It is located about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from Tenkasi and 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) Courtallam. It won the president award (2009) for its hygiene, it is geographically well positioned with a "Lord Ganesh" temple in the entrance of the village and housing scenic views of Western Ghats and drizzling winds from there. Besides the physical features of the village it is the people who make this place unique of its kind. Though diverse populations are seen, "Naicker" and "Pillai" community together account for more than 50% population. People from this village are well known for their hospitality services and their kinship among them. Mr. Mariappan, first of being, to nurture the lifestyle into a job skill aided him in establishing a career in hospitality services and his younger brother Mr. Chockalingam developed it to reach even abroad. Even today, several people from this village have secured a job in hospitality services across the world.

Education

The village started to get attention for its education even half a century ago by Chithamparam Pillai family, commonly called as Seena Thana family. A family member Prof. Chockalingam who has later become a Head in Civil Engineering in Concordia University, Montreal, Canada is the first doctorate from the village. His nucleation in the minds of people to learn modern science and his guidance for several people has established them in esteemed positions of both Indian Government Services and Private sectors. Since then the encouragements for the education have been provided till date by Er. Subramanian Meenakshi Sundaram, another descendant of Seena thana family, through appropriate guidance to pursue career goals for motivated students and by financial rewards for deserved candidates as a memento to his father Meenakshi Sundaram.

Art

The village is also known for their peoples’ artistic talents for several decades. Their reach is beyond the boundaries of village and contributions have been appreciated even in present day stylish Tamil film industry. At least 15 known cinematographers were from this village. Cinematography was initiated in the fields of the village by Aruncahalam who has previously worked in the film industry. Followed by him, his sons have extended the art of cinematography till date. Thanks to the efforts led by them, cinematographers Krishna Chandar, the third son of Mr. Arunachalam, and Mr. Savilo Raja have worked in full length feature film. Apart from cinematography, talents in other forms of art are also seen among the people. Mr. Jeganathan is a versatile writer who later established him as a director for television serials. Mrs. Poongodi Sankaralingam is skilled with mehandhi, a form of tattoo drawing. Siva is proficient in playing flute and has released musical albums both with regard to it and else like "Oh Vennila".

Politics and administration

Besides education and art, the village is well reputed for the politically vibrant thoughts since the age of Naicker periods. According to the present administration system in India it is categorized as Village Panchayat Union and reserved for women by Election Commission of India and Mrs. Velvizhi SivaShankaran presides over the current union.

Spirituality

Spirituality is another facet of the lifestyle of people here, which is evident from several temples located within the village. Lord "Meenakshi" temple is the oldest of all and is governed by the ministry of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) of Tamil Nadu. Other temples for Lord Badrakali, Kulasekara amman, Karadimadan & Kottai karuppan, Sudalaimaadan,Palaveshakaran,Karuppan Kovil,Nallamadan are also present.
