The highway was constructed in the 1930s, and originally covered the route from junction with State Route 82 at Whetstone to Bisbee, passing through the Fry/Sierra Vista area. In the 1960s, SR 90 overtook SR 92's segment north of Sierra Vista. Certain places in the area may still make reference to the prior numeric designation of the roadway, such as the "South 92 Car Wash" which is actually located near the current northern terminus of the highway.
