Bachelor of Information Technology

A Bachelor of Information Technology degree (abbreviated BIT, BInfTech, BInfoTech or B.ICT) is an undergraduate academic degree that generally requires three to four years of study to acquire. While the degree has a major focus on computers and technology, it differs from a Computer Science degree in that students are also expected to study management and information theory. Therefore, while a degree in computer science can be expected to concentrate on the scientific aspects of computing, a degree in information technology can be expected to concentrate on the business and communication applications of computing.

Australia

UNSW Business Information Technology is an undergraduate degree at University of New South Wales, which operates under an industry-academia Co-Operative scheme. BIT is also an offering at the University of Swinburne, Southern Cross University and UTS. A similar Co-Operative Scheme is also available at University of Technology, Sydney, which allows for two industry placements at various sponsor companies.

Canada

Carleton University of Ottawa, Ontario offers a BIT degree through its School of Information Technology. Students in this program specialize in one of two streams: Interactive Multimedia & Design or Network Technology. Concurrently, those enrolled also earn a diploma from Algonquin College.

University of Ontario Institute of Technology or UOIT in Oshawa Ontario also offers a 4 year BIT degree where one can specialize in either Networking, Information Security or Game Development.

This university also offers a graduate program called the MIT program in Information Security which is 2 years.

India

Delhi University offered two 4 year courses BIT (Bachelor of Information Science) & BIS (Bachelor of Information Science) through its Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Mathematical Sciences from the year 1997-2000. Admissions to the course were discontinued from 2001 and the last batch of students completed the academic program in 2005.

Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi offered a regular course BIT (Bachelor of Information Technology) through its School of Computer and Information Science under Virtual Campus Initiative from the year 1999. Admissions to the course were discontinued from 2004. This was course was integrated with Higher National Diploma/Certificate (A Business & Technology Education Council Qualification, United Kingdom) from Edexcel Enterprise, London.

Malaysia

University such as Multimedia University, Asia Pacific University College of Technology & Innovation (UCTI), Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT), and etc, offers a range of Bachelor of Computing & Business Information Technology degrees in Software Engineering, Internet Technology, Mobile Computing, E-Commerce, Business Computing, Enterprise Computing, Forensic Computing, Intelligent Systems and Information Technology.

The course is designed to cover a wide range of technology topics supplemented with business topics, throughout which students will develop their skills to confidently take on a wide variety of job roles where the ability to put together various elements of technology into a seamlessly integrated solution is crucial.

Netherlands

Zuyd University awards a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (B.ICT). This degree is conferred after four years to students specializing in Business Information Systems, Technical Information Systems, Network Infrastructure Design, Computer and Multimedia Design, or Graphic Media Technology.

New Zealand

Wellington Institute of Technology awards a Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT). This degree covers the fundamentals of programming, information technology and communications, and offers an advanced level of skills in Software Development, Systems Analysis Design and Control, Data Communications, Networks, Intelligent Systems, Programming and Databases.Victoria University of Wellington and Otago Polytechnic also offer BIT degrees. Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology offers a BICT degree.

ri Lanka

In Sri Lanka Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) is 3 year undergraduate degree without any specialization, mostly awarded as an external degree, it is often considered lower in standing to the traditional Bachelor of Science special degrees in computer engineering, computer science and Information Technology, which mostly are 4 years with a specialization.

United States

Georgia Southern University awards a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. The Information Technology (IT) program was inaugurated in the Spring of 2000 and started offering classes in the Fall of 2001. The program is housed in the College of Information Technology and was one of the first IT programs accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The degree program covers coursework in web design, programming, databases and networking while stressing the applications of these technologies in a range of different areas.
