The BSc in Business Information Technology (BIT) at the University of New South Wales is is an industry linked education program leading to the award of the qualification Bachelor of Science (Business Information Technology). Students are admitted through the scholarship selection procedures administered by the UNSW Co-op Program office. The program draws on three core disciplinary areas: Information Systems, Accounting and Computer Science.

The BIT program has been designed in conjunction with Information Systems and Information Technology industry professionals to provide for the needs of Australian businesses. The program requires that 18 months of coordinated industrial experience at three different sponsoring organisations by undertaken. A scholarship is paid to students from funds donated by the sponsoring organisations. See UNSW Co-op Program for more information.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

This program aims to teach students the technical knowledge and theory required for developing information systems (IS) and information technology (IT) in a commercial environment. It assists students to learn why IS and IT systems are implemented and the business implications of these systems. The program covers all the technological requirements of an information system. This includes hardware and related telecommunications needs, as well as giving a solid grounding for the design and development of software to support business operations.

Students gain knowledge in systems development, design principles and skills in computer programming. It aims to equip students with the skills, qualifications and opportunities to enable them to develop sound business based solutions.

The course covers: capturing system requirements; initial analysis and design of a system; management of related data; telecommunications requirements; data processing needs; information systems security /audit needs; system implementation and maintenance eCommerce considerations and many other areas.

Career Opportunities

BIT draws from a diverse range of disciplinary areas and provides electives in Commerce and INFS. This promotes flexibility in work placement across industries and within organisations. BIT graduates are highly sought after and are attractive to business, industry and the government sector, including commercial, manufacturing, software development and consultancy organisations. Many scholars receive multiple offers of employment during their final year of study. The career paths of graduates encompass information technology, information systems management and also more general business functions such as accounting, finance, marketing and human resources management.

Applying for BIT

Entry to the course may proceed only on the basis of an application directly to Co-Op program Office at the University of New South Wales and application through UAC. The preferred method of applying for the BIT Co-op Program is via the online Application system found on the [http://www.coop.unsw.edu.au/ UNSW Co-op Program website] .

Students who are academically acceptable for the BIT Degree Program, but who are not offered a scholarship position, should consider registering for first Stage entry into the BSc (IS) 3979 program. If BIT Scholarships become available at the end of stage 1, students undertaking the BSc (IS) 3979 program may be offered an interview and a transfer into the BSc (BIT) 3971 co-operative Scholarship Degree Program.
